Layer Cake Shiraz 2013

As an homage to our upcoming trip, we thought we'd explore what Australian wine has to offer. The Layer Cake Shiraz opens on the nose with oak, rhubarb and tart red fruit. A swirl and a sip later, a tart burst is followed with bright red fruit and chocolate that carries to a buttery finish. Although the finish is moderate in length, the tannins and acidity linger longer than the fruit which gives it a curious quality. While it needs a moment to open up, this wine is not particularly aggressive. The fleeting flavors are pleasant but forgettable. A strong prelude to our Australian wine adventures. We'll revisit this region soon. If we remember.
